As a rough guide (2025–26), a grid-tied rooftop system costs about ₹55,000–₹75,000 per kW before subsidy. A typical 3 kW home system is around ₹1.8–2.2 lakh before the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, which brings the net cost down significantly.

The central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the 3rd kW — capped at ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. Several states add their own top-up. Apply on the national portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) and choose a registered vendor.

With subsidy and net metering, payback is commonly 3–5 years depending on your tariff, sunlight, and usage — after which the electricity is effectively free for the 25+ year life of the panels.

Net metering lets you export surplus solar power to the grid and get credited for it on your electricity bill. You only pay for the 'net' units consumed. Rules, caps, and application steps vary by DISCOM and state.

On-grid is cheapest and ideal where grid power is reliable and net metering is available. Hybrid adds a battery for backup during outages. Off-grid (battery-only, no grid) suits remote sites. For most Indian homes with occasional cuts, on-grid or a small hybrid is the sweet spot.

A plain on-grid system shuts off during outages for safety. To keep running during cuts you need a hybrid inverter with battery backup, or a system with backup-capable inverters.

Plan for roughly 80–100 sq. ft. of shadow-free roof per kW. A typical 3 kW home system needs about 250–300 sq. ft.

Quality panels carry 25–30 year performance warranties. Maintenance is minimal: periodic cleaning of the panels and an annual inspection of the wiring and inverter.

Choose a DISCOM-registered vendor, compare 2–3 quotes, check warranty and service terms, and ask the community about experiences in your city. Reputation and reviews matter more than the lowest price.
